Padre Staples Mall Overview

Padre Staples Mall opened in 1970 as the largest retail shopping mall in the Corpus Christi, Texas area. The mall was proposed in the spring of 1968 and its construction was completed in Spring of 1970. The mall would include a movie theater, food court, carousel, and 3 anchors. Its major anchors all came from the area of downtown Corpus Christi, Texas. JC Penney, Dillards, Woolworth, Bealls and Palais Royal would be the five major anchors including the Movie Theater. Luby's Cafeteria came in 1971.
In 1986, Foley's joined the mall as the fifth anchor. The movie theater closed in 1997. In 1998, Woolworth closed and was replaced with mall space. Palais Royal closed in 2001. In 2006 the Foley's anchor at Padre Stales Mall was acquired by Macy's. In spring 2007, plans were announced for major renovations which would bring in a 42,000 square foot Forever 21 store as well as a food court, the latter replacing the vacant Palais Royal.
